2009 Consultation Proposals for Royal Albert Fields

According to the 2009 consultation document, the proposal for Oaklands/Royal Albert involves:

  • Redeveloping Oaklands, LCT’s flagship unit for the elderly, to cater for adults of all ages.  The unit would accommodate people suffering from functional illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.
  • Renovating Derby Home, currently derelict, to accommodate the community services currently in Oaklands.
  • The creation of a secure "Section 136 Suite" at Oaklands - a facility used by the police should they believe someone needs immediate care and assessment in a safe environment.
  • It will not include a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Patients will have to travel to Preston or Blackpool – a long way for Carnforth patients.

Lancashire Care still intends to build a new unit on Royal Albert Fields

On first glance, this seems like a fairly small proposal, all contained within the existing boundaries. Howevever the Trust has not ruled out future expansion on the fields.

On page 7 of the 2009 consultation document it states:

"Under these plans Lancaster Care’s existing inpatient services for adults and older people in the Lancaster and Morecambe area would move into a new unit on Royal Albert Fields.

Due to the scale of this programme of work, this will take an estimated ten years to deliver. Therefore Lancashire Care and NHS North Lancashire need to ensure that the standard of inpatient care is the best possible in the meantime."
